Mai ameţitoare vorbe nu s-au rostit niciodată, afară de: Cred, Doamne, ajută necredinţei mele.
… Nu cred şi totuşi mă rog. Cred şi totuşi ştiu că nu cred cu adevărat. Cred de vreme ce-i spun „Doamne”‘ lui Hristos. Şi nu cred de vreme ce-l rog să vină în ajutorul necredinţei mele. (Şi cui îi cer să mă vindece de necredinţă? Celui în care urmează să cred!) Cauzalitatea e desfiinţată, legea succesiunii în timp, ca tot ce-i material sau psihic, dispare. Şi cred şi nu cred, simultan. Dedublarea. Contradicţia. Deci incertitudinea, angoasa. Conştiinţa otrăvind totul, otrăveşte şi credinţa pe care în clipa când ne dăm seama de ea o prefacem în necredinţă deoarece gândind credinţa o scoatem din inefabil, din candoare
Dar şi ieşirea, nădejdea, nimic nu-i pierdut: pentru că, smerit, adaog: ajută-mă, luând aminte că omeneasca mea condiţie e indiscutabil legată de paradox şi contradicţie. Simultaneitatea textului ar trebui să ducă la deznădejde dacă n-ar fi acel scurt ajută care — fărâmă de bob de sare, infim catalizator cu uriaşe puteri de transmutare şi nebănuite consecinţe combinatorii — rezolvă cuadratura şi preface strigătul buimăcirii în lacrimile încrederii

You cannot cure the soul of others or ‘help people,’ without having changed yourself. You cannot put in order the spiritual economy of others, so long as there is chaos in your own soul. You cannot bring peace to others if you do not have it yourself. Often, we help other people, not by a series of conscious acts directed upon their soul, but rather by influencing them through our spiritual gifts, without ourselves seeing or knowing how we do so. Once (St.) Anthony the Great asked a visitor who said nothing at all, ‘Why do you not ask me anything?’ and the other answered, ‘It is enough for me to look at you, holy father’.
